Dissendium into Data

Hello again my friends,
I have again collected more data from Pottermore.com. This time I have opted to include comments from other houses in my data set. To situate this data for everyone, I took the following data set from the Great Hall section of the site. This area of the game is a place where players can see how many points each house has in the running to win the coveted House Cup. It also has a section on dueling leaders from all the houses as well as leaders in the number of most house points from each. The final main area of the Great Hall is the comments feed and consequently where I chose to focus my attention this week. This is a unique portion of the site that allows players to interact with members of other houses.

So what do you think? Pretty interesting? I liked this piece of data because it showed a different sort of interaction between players from last week's data set. I know you can't see in this particular rendition of the data but the above "students" were from all four houses (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw). In the game, the houses are somewhat rivals since they are all trying to win the House Cup. This data set shows some of that rivalry with NightStone7032 writing the first comment. I also found this interesting because it seemed to parallel a section from the Harry Potter books themselves. In the fourth book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, during the Christmas season there was a Yule Ball held in the Great Hall and all the houses and their other school guests attended. The majority of this data set seems to be echoing that particular story event from about EchoFlitwick9316 (or possibly HoneyUnicorn4867) all the way down to GloryNimbus5723. It demonstrates how players interact within a structured game space, how players form an identity in such a structured game, how role playing fits into a game space, as well as it exemplifies how fandom really creates the space even if Pottermore.com was designed with such strict limitations (or not?). 

I really liked how this data set fits in with the study of how people create an identity for themselves in online spaces. That identity is how they interact with others and even can give others an impression of how that player wants to be viewed in their interactions online. I think this data set will have some strong ties with upcoming readings for DL 636.

Hello again everyone,
I have been quite busy collecting data for the analysis portion of the Pottermore.com project. So, what I have chosen to show you all is a set of data from the Gryffindor House homepage. For those of you unfamiliar with the Pottermore.com site, there is a chat feed as well as two leaders boards: one for dueling leaders and the other for house points leaders. There are other features as well such as quotes from your house ghost and other such Harry Potter trivia related the the house. The overall goal of the game is to earn house points and to win the House Cup from the other three rival houses at Hogwarts.

So there it is. This particular data sample is helpful in understanding what kinds of interactions this particular game allows the players. Since Pottermore.com is primarily a one person game there is an interesting relationship that can be researched from this chat feed. There are other ways to interact with other players but it is very limited (duels which you can challenge other house players to and your friends; status updates much like Facebook). I liked this piece of data because it shows the variation in ability (?) of the players who use this site. It also demonstrates some of the digital language that we are seeing more frequently in online environments, as well as it works in real time and allows the "students" to help each other accomplish the one-player game tasks.

I think this was an interesting demonstration of David Bawden's (18) concept of digital literacy and how multiple formats interact to create a digital world which the individual needs to be able to navigate. I particularly liked how this linked with Bawden's list of skills for digital literacy (20):

• "knowledge assembly," building a "reliable information hoard" from diverse sources
• retrieval skills, plus "critical thinking" for making informed judgements about retrieved information, with wariness about the validity and completeness of internet sources
• reading and understanding non-sequential and dynamic material
• awareness of the value of traditional tools in conjunction with net-worked media
• awareness of "people networks" as sources of advice and help
• using filters and agents to manage incoming information
• being comfortable with publishing and communicating information, as well as accessing it

For future data collection and analysis of Pottermore.com, I have decided to focus further on the phenomenon of how players create an identity for themselves in a space which dictates much of how others perceive you as a player.
